Film Babble Blog's Top 10 Movies Of 2015 (With Spillover)

As the Academy Award nominations are going to be announced tomorrow, I thought it was finally time to unveil my top 10 movies of the last year. I saw over a hundred movies on the big screen in 2015, and I found it to be a good, not great, year for film. 

There are a number of notable films I haven?t seen yet, but, of course, you can never see ?em all. So let?s get right to my favorite motion picture picks of '15, in descending order:

10. ROOM (Dir. Lenny Abrahamson)

Like I said in my review last fall, if Brie Larson doesn't get a Oscar nomination for her harrowing role as a woman who?s been held captive in a backyard shed for five years taking care of her five-year old son (the result of a rape by her abductor), I'll be very offended. The kid (Jason Tremblay) was pretty ?on? too.

9. THE MARTIAN (Dir. Ridley Scott) Astronaut and can-do acheiver Matt Damon sciences the shit out of his predicament of being stuck on Mars, and it makes for an inspirational epic of cerebral sci-fi. Read my review here.

8. INSIDE OUT (Dirs. Pete Docter & Ronnie Del Carmen)

It's been five years since a Pixar film made my top 10, and this one definitely wins a placing because, as I wrote last summer, it pulls every heartstring there is.

7. THE HATEFUL EIGHT
(Dir. Quentin Tarantino)

The ?Eighth Film by Quentin Tarantino,? as it's identified in its opening credits (who else does that?), is his most divisive work for sure, but its bloody Western mix of THE THING with RESERVOIR DOGS really entertained the bejesus out of me. Here's why.

6. ANOMALISA (Dir. Duke Johnson & Charlie Kaufman)

A stop-motion emotional masterpiece from the guy who brought you BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, ADAPTATION, and SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK. And it's the second film on my top 10 that has Jennifer Jason Leigh in it! My review of this delightful yet unnerving piece of high art will be posted when it opens in my area later this month.

5. CAROL (Dir. Todd Haynes)

Todd Haynes' film follow-up to one of my favorites of 2007 (I'M NOT THERE) is a sophisticated, complicated, and immaculately artful look at a lesbian love affair in the oppressive era of 1950s New York City. The performances by Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are as perfect perfect as their setting. Read my review.

4. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD
(Dir. George Miller)

As I wrote in my review last May, George Miller's fourth entry in the MAD MAX series is a ?brutally brilliant blast?; ?an orgy of fire-breathing cars, pole-swingers, chainsaws, steampunk thugs, and gas fire explosions all given a heavy metal soundtrack by a masked musician with a flame-throwing electric guitar atop a vehicle piled with amplifiers.? And it's even more awesome than that sounds.

3. SICARIO (Dir. Denis Villeneuve)

As modern action movies go, as much as I loved MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, this superbly dark cartel counterinsurgency thriller got to me more. The terrifically intense turns by Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro have a lot to do with that. My review.

2. THE REVENANT
(Dir. Alejandro Gonz?lez I??rritu)

Leonardo DiCaprio deserves (and will probably get) the Oscar for what he went through in the punishing wild here, but I predictTom Hardy will at least get a nomination too for his supporting part. The film itself, as well as I??rritu, may also get nods, but coming after last year's win for BIRDMAN, I wouldn't bet on it. My review.

1. SPOTLIGHT (Dir. Tom McCarthy)

Tom McCarthy's fifth film, his follow-up to last year's infamous Adam Sandler flop THE COBBLER (WTF?), which focuses on the Boston Globe?s ?Spotlight? team into the scandal of child molestation and systematic cover-up within the Catholic Church, is a clean, precise procedural about a extremely messy, and unsettling subject. 

The perfect storm of an excellent cast including Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, John Slattery, and Liev Schreiber; a sharp, involving screenplay, along with its top notch editing, score, and Masanobu Takayanagi's cinematography all collide together to make this my #1 movie of 2015. I'll be shocked if the Academy doesn't reward multiple categories for this one. My review.

THE MARTIAN (2015) REVIEW : Another Bold Performance In Sci-Fi Genre

 

3 tahun terakhir ini bisa jadi adalah tahun di mana perjalanan ke luar angkasa menjadi salah satu konflik yang menarik untuk diangkat menjadi sebuah film. Di setiap tahunnya, film-film ber-setting tempat luar angkasa itu selalu mendapatkan respon positif dari kritikus maupun penonton film. Gravity di tahun 2013, mematok nilai yang sangat tinggi untuk film bertema ini. Di tahun 2014, Interstellar milik Christopher Nolan pun juga menghempas pemikiran penontonnya dengan alur cerita yang ditawarkan.

 

Maka di tahun 2015, salah satu master di genre ini yaitu Ridley Scott kembali menghadirkan sebuah petualangan luar angkasa yang diadaptasi dari buku milik Andy Weir. The Martian, buku yang menjadi salah satu best seller di New York ini diadaptasi menjadi sebuah naskah oleh Drew Goddard yang selalu berhasil menulis ulang sebuah buku ke dalam naskah yang ditulisnya. Juga, film ini dibintangi oleh bintang-bintang ternama dan salah satunya adalah Matt Damon di deretan aktor utamanya.

Dengan adanya Gravity dan Interstellar dalam deretan film-film ber-setting luar angkasa, The Martian jelas tak bisa menawarkan sebuah terobosan cerita baru untuk ditawarkan kepada penontonnya. Tetapi tanpa adanya premis cerita yang baru, The Martian tetap bisa menghadirkan sebuah film bertahan hidup di luar angkasa yang sangat menyenangkan untuk diikuti. Dengan durasi 141 menit, The Martian bisa menjadi salah satu pengalaman merasakan luar angkasa di layar perak yang sangat seru. 

Satu tim dikirim oleh NASA ke planet Mars untuk bisa menemukan materi-materi kehidupan di sana. Tim tersebut terdiri dari Mark Watney (Matt Damon), Melissa Lewis (Jessica Chastain), Beth Johanssen (Kate Mara), Rick Martinez (Michael Pena), dan Chris Beck (Sebastian Stan). Di tengah perjalanan dalam menyelesaikan misinya tersebut, badai datang menghampiri mereka dan membuat mereka terpaksa harus meninggalkan planet Mars sebelum misinya selesai.

Di perjalanan menuju ke pesawat luar angkasa mereka bernama Hermes, Mark Watney terhantam oleh satelit milik tim tersebut dan membuatnya menghilang saat badai. Anggota tim berusaha untuk menyelamatkan Mark Watney, tetapi waktunya tak cukup dan mereka merasa bahwa Mark Watney terdeteksi telah meninggal karena kehilangan oksigen. Setelah anggota tim kembali ke pesawat dan menuju kembali ke bumi, Mark Watney ternyata masih selamat dan dia berusaha bertahan hidup di planet Mars sampai NASA datang menyelamatkan mereka. 

Dengan patokan yang sangat tinggi dari dua film ber-setting luar angkasa yang sama di 2 tahun berturut-turut, rasanya akan susah bagi The Martian untuk bisa mendapatkan respon serupa dari para kritikus atau penonton film. Tetapi, akan berbeda ketika film ini ditangani oleh Ridley Scott. Orang yang berhasil mengarahkan genre science fiction lewat film Prometheus, Blade Runner, atau pun film legendarisnya Alien.

Benar, The Martian bisa tampil sangat prima untuk menawarkan sebuah konflik bertahan hidup di luar angkasa yang menyenangkan dan berbeda dari film-film yang sama di genre ini. The Martian memang tak bisa menawarkan sesuatu yang baru jika dibandingkan dengan Gravity atau Interstellar. The Martian akan cenderung berpremis sama dengan Gravity tetapi juga memiliki babak yang sama dengan Interstellar. Hanya saja, The Martian memiliki nuansa yang berbeda dari dua film itu.

Lupakan 2 film yang selalu menjadi bayang-bayang The Martian atau film-film lain yang bertema serupa karena The Martian memiliki caranya sendiri untuk menghipnotis penontonnya. Di dalam durasi yang bisa dibilang panjang, The Martian memiliki cara penyampaian yang sangat dinamis tanpa ada rasa jenuh yang menghampiri penontonnya. Drew Goddard tahu bagaimana caranya untuk menyampaikan kembali apa yang ada di buku ke dalam naskahnya. Dia bisa menyusun alur cerita yang seharusnya bisa saja terpecah dalam 3 babak yang terasa episodik. 

Penyusunan cerita yang bagus dari Drew Goddard dalam naskahnya, tak berarti apa-apa jika Ridley Scott juga tak berhasil mengarahkan filmnya dengan baik. Ada 3 setting utama yang ada di dalam film The Martian, yaitu Mars, Pesawat Hermes, dan juga Kantor NASA. Ridley Scott sangat berhasil mengoneksikan ketiga setting tersebut meskipun tak terkoneksi secara langsung. Meski hanya terhubung lewat Interkom sebagai media penyampaian pesan setiap karakternya, The Martian bisa membangun atmosfir dan tensi yang kuat lewat dialog pun juga dengan keterikatan setiap karakternya.

Karakter-karakter di dalam The Martian cukup banyak untuk menggerakkan plot ceritanya yang mungkin sederhana, tetapi Ridley Scott bisa memaksimalkan setiap karakternya sehingga The Martian tersajikan dengan kuat. Bukan malah menjadi bumerang bagi filmnya yang bisa saja terpecah fokusnya hanya karena karakter di dalamnya terlalu banyak. Justru, karakter-karakter yang banyak itu malah memperkuat konten utama dari The Martian yang cukup sederhana.

Pun, The Martian mengangkat isu kehumasan yang direpresentasikan kepada salah satu karakter yang diperankan oleh Chiwetel Ejiofor. Bagaimana seorang jembatan perusahaan kepada khalayak untuk mengklarifikasi konflik besar yang terjadi di perusahaan tersebut. Juga, strategi apa yang digunakan seorang humas agar tidak menimbulkan keresahan luar biasa bagi khalayak tentang masalah yang sedang menyerang suatu perusahaan tersebut. 

The Martian pun memiliki suasana retro yang menyenangkan sebagai sebuah film ber-setting luar angkasa. Dengan pilihan-plihan playlist lagu dari Abba, David Bowie, dan beberapa musisi lain yang datang  di tahun 80-an, The Martian jelas menjadi salah satu film ber-setting luar angkasa yang berbeda. Pun juga, The Martian mematahkan suasana film-film di genre ini yang melulu serius dalam penceritaannya dan dengan mudah menyita perhatian penontonnya.

The Martian memang tak bisa dihindarkan akan selalu dikomparasikan dengan dua film ber-setting dan ber-genre yang sama yang hadir di 2 tahun terakhir. The Martian memang tak bisa menghadirkan premis cerita yang baru dengan hadirnya Gravity atau Interstellar. Tetapi, bukan berarti The Martian bisa dipandang sebelah mata, karena The Martian tampil sangat prima lewat arahan yang kuat dari Ridley Scott dan didukung naskah yang ditulis oleh Drew Goddard. Sehingga, The Martian adalah salah satu film space survival yang bisa dijajarkan menjadi salah satu film ber-setting luar angkasa terbaik dan juga salah satu yang terbaik tahun ini.

Don?t Diss On Matt Damon And Miss THE MARTIAN

Two years ago around this time we had Alfonso Cuar?n?s GRAVITY, last year there was Christopher Nolan?s INTERSTELLAR, and now there?s this year?s cerebral sci-fi fall release about astronauts struggling for survival in space, Ridley Scott?s THE MARTIAN, an adaptation of the 2011 bestseller by Andrew Weir that I never got around to reading. And with the news that they just found water on Mars, it couldn't be more timely.

Set in the near future, the film stars Matt Damon as Mark Watney, a NASA Astronaut who is left behind by mistake on Mars when the crew of the Ares 3 mission are forced to evacuate during a dangerous dust storm. In the chaos, Damon?s Watney is impaled by flying debris and sent flying off into the distance, leaving his team members to believe that he?s dead.

After Watney regains consciousness and gets back to his house base module in the middle of a large northern basin on Mars called Acidalia Planitia (a real area on the planet) he sizes up the situation via a direct-to-camera video log: ?I have no way to contact NASA or my crewmates, but even if I could, it would take four years for another manned mission to reach me, and I?m in a hab designed to last 31 days.?

Our hero figures in order to make water (I guess this aspect is now retro-dated) and grow food on a planet where nothing grows, re-establish contact with NASA, and make the months long journey on the Mars rover cross-planet to the landing site of the next mission he?s ?going to have to science the shit out of this!?

Meanwhile back on earth, NASA scientists and officials, including Chiwetel Ejiofor as Director of Mars Mission, Jeff Daniels as the head of NASA, Kristen Wiig as NASA?s head of public relations, and Sean Bean as the flight director, find out that Watney is still alive and they attempt to do the math, with the help of Donald Glover as a awkward scruffy astrodynamicist, and unravel the red tape needed to get him back.

Oh, and the NASA brain trust struggles with whether or not to tell the returning crew headed by Jessica Chastain, who, guilt-stricken at leaving behind her fellow colleague, would surely go against orders to turn her ship around to go back and try to save him if she knew. Also on board with Chastain are Kate Mara, Michael Pe?a, Sebastian Stan, and Aksel Hennie, who each have their moments and add to the film?s driving force of humanity.

Damon?s performance as the can-do optimist Watney is so solid that you?ll forget about the controversial crap he?s said that?s had him raked over the coals by the press lately. Here he?s a guy you are really rooting for as he successfully grows a crop of potatoes and laughing with as he bitches about the only music he has to listen to ? Commander Chastain?s disco collection on her computer: ?I will not turn the beat around!?

Despite the stakes, which do carry considerable weight, this is one of Scott?s sunniest and most fun films. Especially when compared to his last space epic, the ALIEN prequel PROMETHEUS, which I found more grueling than a good time.

Sure, there shades of many movies in play here from APOLLO 13 to CASTAWAY; from the aforementioned GRAVITY to 127 HOURS and so on, but THE MARTIAN never feels derivative. Drew Goddard?s tightly scripted structure smoothes out the tropes into a thoroughly engaging, and consistently gripping narrative. It?s also the second film I?ve seen this week that well utilized the 3D format ? THE WALK was the other.

THE MARTIAN and THE WALK, which both open this week, are also alike in that they are inspirational epics that were immaculately shot by the same cinematographer, Dariusz Wolski. I?ll be shocked if Wolski doesn?t take home an Oscar next year for one of these visual feasts.

It?s so nice to be back in the ?movies are getting good again? season, with such a marvelously gripping movie as THE MARTIAN heading the herd. Just don?t be dissing on Damon so hard that you miss it.

Meanwhile back on earth, NASA scientists and officials, including Chiwetel Ejiofor as Director of Mars Mission, Jeff Daniels as the head of NASA, Kristen Wiig as NASA?s head of public relations, and Sean Bean as the flight director, find out that Watney is still alive and they attempt to do the math, with the help of Donald Glover as a awkward scruffy astrodynamicist, and unravel the red tape needed to get him back.

Oh, and the NASA brain trust struggles with whether or not to tell the returning crew headed by Jessica Chastain, who, guilt-stricken at leaving behind her fellow colleague, would surely go against orders to turn her ship around to go back and try to save him if she knew. Also on board with Chastain are Kate Mara, Michael Pe?a, Sebastian Stan, and Aksel Hennie, who each have their moments and add to the film?s driving force of humanity.

Damon?s performance as the can-do optimist Watney is so solid that you?ll forget about the controversial crap he?s said that?s had him raked over the coals by the press lately. Here he?s a guy you are really rooting for as he successfully grows a crop of potatoes and laughing with as he bitches about the only music he has to listen to ? Commander Chastain?s disco collection on her computer: ?I will not turn the beat around!?

Despite the stakes, which do carry considerable weight, this is one of Scott?s sunniest and most fun films. Especially when compared to his last space epic, the ALIEN prequel PROMETHEUS, which I found more grueling than a good time.

Sure, there shades of many movies in play here from APOLLO 13 to CASTAWAY; from the aforementioned GRAVITY to 127 HOURS and so on, but THE MARTIAN never feels derivative. Drew Goddard?s tightly scripted structure smoothes out the tropes into a thoroughly engaging, and consistently gripping narrative. It?s also the second film I?ve seen this week that well utilized the 3D format ? THE WALK was the other.

THE MARTIAN and THE WALK, which both open this week, are also alike in that they are inspirational epics that were immaculately shot by the same cinematographer, Dariusz Wolski. I?ll be shocked if Wolski doesn?t take home an Oscar next year for one of these visual feasts.

It?s so nice to be back in the ?movies are getting good again? season, with such a marvelously gripping movie as THE MARTIAN heading the herd. Just don?t be dissing on Damon so hard that you miss it.
